A wedding ring is the piece of jewelry you are most likely to wear every single day for the rest of your life. It makes sense, then, that more couples want one that feels like theirs, rather than one picked from a tray because it was the nearest fit.
Customizing a wedding ring is simpler than most people expect. You do not need to arrive with a finished design; you need a few clear decisions and a jeweler who will translate them. This guide walks through those decisions in order, then explains how our bespoke process works from first message to finished ring.
Start with how the ring will be worn
Before you think about stones or shapes, think about daily life. The best custom rings are designed around the person wearing them.
- Will it sit beside an engagement ring? If so, the two need to work as a pair. A straight band may leave a gap under a raised center stone, while a curved or notched band can sit flush against it.
- How hands-on is your day? If you work with your hands, a lower profile and protective settings, such as a bezel or a channel, will wear better than tall claws.
- Do you prefer to notice it or forget it? A slim band disappears into everyday life; a wider band or a full row of diamonds makes more of a statement.
Choose your metal
The metal sets the tone of the whole ring, and it should usually match, or deliberately complement, your engagement ring.
- 18K yellow gold is warm and classic, and is enjoying a strong revival.
- 18K white gold gives a bright, cool finish that makes white diamonds look crisp.
- Platinum is naturally white, dense, and hard-wearing, which makes it a favorite for rings that will be worn every day.
Mixing metals is entirely possible too. A yellow gold band beside a platinum engagement ring can look deliberate and modern.
Decide on diamonds, and how many
Many wedding rings are plain bands, and they are beautiful in their simplicity. If you would like some sparkle, there are a few classic directions:
- Half-eternity: diamonds across the top of the band only, which is comfortable and easier to resize.
- Full eternity: diamonds all the way around, for brilliance from every angle.
- Pavé: many small diamonds set closely together, for a fine, glittering texture.
- A single set stone or a few spaced stones: a quieter, more modern look.
The Promise Ring: a half-eternity band of round lab-grown diamonds in a shared-prong setting.
Because all of our diamonds are lab-grown, you can often go further than you expect with the same budget, whether that means more diamonds, larger ones, or a finer grade. Every diamond we use meets our house standard of D to E color and VS clarity or higher.
Add the details that make it yours
This is where a ring becomes personal. Small, considered details often matter more than size:
- Shape: ovals, pears, marquises, and emerald cuts can all be set into a band, or mixed for something unexpected.
- Profile: a band can be flat, rounded, knife-edge, or gently tapered.
- A stone you already own: a family diamond or a stone from an unworn piece can be reset into something new.
- A reference you love: a photograph of a ring you admire is a great starting point. Rather than copying it, we work out what draws you to it, the proportions or the setting style, and design an original piece around that.
Statement shapes and layered halos: an oval double-halo ring from our atelier.
Get the size right
A wedding ring should be comfortable all day, in warm weather and cold. A few tips:
- Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest.
- Wider bands usually feel tighter than slim ones, so you may need a slightly larger size.
- Check that the ring slides over the knuckle comfortably.
Our Diamond Guide includes an international ring size chart to help you convert between UK, US, European, and Asian sizes.
How our bespoke process works
When you commission a piece with us, nothing is cast, set, or finalized until you have approved every detail. Here is what to expect:
A real working drawing from our design studio. Every commission starts life on paper.
- Consultation. Send us your brief, as detailed or as loose as you like. We discuss your ideas by message, and there is nothing to pay and no obligation at this stage.
- Design. Our designers create an original concept from your brief. We can share a CAD design on request so you can see exact proportions, along with photographs or film of similar pieces we have made. For larger commissions, a hand drawing is available on request. We refine the design with you within the rounds included.
- Stone selection. We curate loose stones for you to choose from. Lab-grown diamonds of one carat and above come with an IGI report.
- Creation. Your ring is cast, set, and hand-finished in our own workshop, typically in 12 to 15 days once the design is approved. We are happy to share progress videos along the way.
- Delivery. Before your ring leaves us, we film it and send you the film, so you see the finished piece before it arrives. It then travels to you insured and tracked.
The conversation and the estimate cost nothing. If you would like us to design your piece, we ask for a design fee of 10% of the estimate, which is deducted in full from the price of your ring when you go ahead.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a custom wedding ring take?
The design stage moves at your pace. Once the design is approved, production typically takes 12 to 15 days.
Can you match a band to my engagement ring?
Yes. Share photographs of your engagement ring, ideally from the side as well as the top, and we will design a band that sits comfortably beside it.
Can I use a diamond I already own?
Yes. Resetting an existing stone, such as a family heirloom, is some of our most rewarding work. Just mention it in your brief.
Can a bespoke ring be returned?
Because each bespoke piece is made for one person, commissions are non-refundable. That is why we only begin making once you are completely happy with the design.
